In the new catalog, the theme of “If…you only knew,” offers us some insight as to what inspires the designs and collaborations at J.Crew.
Number 8 is Dulken & Derrick. The following little blurb is from the J.Crew catalog.
When you see beautiful flowers in bridal magazines, Dulken & Derrick are behind them. They have been making gorgeous silk flowers since 1941. We adore them and decided to show them in totally new way. See them all jcrew.com…
I absolutely love the way the coats have been styled in the catalog. These flowers are not yet available to purchase online. I am anxiously awaiting their arrival. I can’t wait to buy some fun colors and pin them to my coats this cold weather season.
But if you can’t wait, you can buy them directly from Dulken & Derrick on their website. They have a “J.Crew Inspired” section.

I love these pins too but not for the price! Read where they are going to be priced $85–150…that is crazy for a pin let alone that is will be probably out of style next season. Very Carrie Bradshaw.

Yikes! I didn’t realize that they were going to be that expensive.
September 25th, 2008 - 8:20 am
I agree. It is more economical to buy them directly from Dulken and Derrick, which is probably what I will do. It seems a little absurd to price the pins higher than the designer does.

I am looking at the D&D site, and there seems to be a wide range of prices. You can buy things for $10 or for $350. Even though I wouldn’t pay $350 for a flower, I like that there are many options. In reality though, I think I would pay about $50 at most for something like this.

Wow, that is VERY wide range! I agree with you. Why buy them from J.Crew when the vendor is selling them much cheaper?

I fell in love with these flowers as soon as I saw them in the catalog. But I cannot justify paying $85 for a flower pin.

I ended up buying 3 silk flowers from Dulken & Derrik today. They came of $145 including shipping. I got the Charcoal silk rose as shown on the J Crew Feature Page, the Hand Rolled Poppy (J Crew’s is a single tone, I got the 2 tone - orange and yellow - I was told by Pam there at this particular silk flower was featured on the cover of Harper’s a couple of years back) and I also got a 7″ Silk Rose in a Camel shade. I know I paid a lot for the 3 flowers but they’re so beautiful and they come with pins so that I don’t have to mess with them and can wear them immediately. Yay!!!

Karen, you must be so excited about your purchase! Would you be willing to share some insight into the quality of the flowers when you get them in the mail? I would love to feature your thoughts in a blog post.

Leigh, I would love to share my opinion on the quality of these flowers when I receive them. I am in Canada and Pam, the lady I was dealing with there, told me that it would take about 2 weeks for me to get them. I will let you know as soon as I do.
I had originally thought of making my own with some “higher-end” decorative silk flowers from Michaels but they just felt to “crunchy”. I can’t wait for the ones from Dulken & Derrik to arrive. I am sure that they will be beautiful.

That would be so great, Karen! I can’t wait to hear from you. Please feel free to email me at leigh @ jcrewaholics.com. I would love to post your review and any pictures you are interested in sharing.

Also, did this post prompt you to purchase flowers from Dulken & Derrik or had you already previously considered that? I was just wondering. Thanks!

I used to own a clothing boutique and sold flower pins with super strong magnets instead of pins. That way delicate silks and chiffons were never pierced and ruined. It would be very easy to convert any flower pins you purchase.
September 26th, 2008 - 12:07 pm
That’s good to know Raina. How does one go about converting them from pin to magnet?
Leigh, when I received my latest J Crew catalog about 10 days ago, I googled Dulken & Derrik to find out more about them. I was contemplating buying at that time but didn’t. Then I saw your post and at the same time, saw their J Crew Inspired Flowers section. Had I not seen your post, I would likely not have gone back to the Dulken & Derrik site until the flowers became available on J Crew. In a way, I guess your blog inspired my purchase.

Hi Karen, You remove the pin and take one half of a small round magnet and hot glue it to the same spot the pin was. To wear the flower, place it as you normally would and slip the other half of the magnet in place. Voila! No holes in your clothing.
The magnets can be found at hobby shops and craft stores. They resemble hearing aid batteries.

Go to Flowersinthecity.com (Dulken & Derrick’s website) and you will find similar/same pieces that J.Crew will carry, and cheaper!
September 27th, 2008 - 11:12 pm
Thanks Jill. I did link to their website in the post. They have a page that is called “J.Crew Inspired.” I guess they are trying to capitalize on any J.Crew shopper that might venture to their website. The flowers are much cheaper on their website than from J.Crew.
Karen actually ordered some flowers from Dulken & Derrick and will review them for this blog when she receives them in the mail.
I am so glad you found the blog!

help! i can’t find the page that’s called “j crew inspired” — i’ve tried a search of the dulkin and derrick website and nothing comes up for “j crew” — do you have the link? and by the way, does dulkin and derrick sell these as pins, or just flowers that we need to glue onto pins?
September 28th, 2008 - 8:09 pm
Hey Patricia. The link is in the post.
But here it is again for you:

Karen, in the comments above wrote that she ordered some flowers. I believe they are in pins and come fully assembled. All you have to do is pin them on your garments.

It says on the JCrew women’s accessories page that the flower pins are already sold out! What? To my knowledge I never saw any online at JCrew to begin with???? Anyone else???
September 29th, 2008 - 8:06 am
Ann, can you send me a link to that page where it says they are SOLD OUT? I can not seem to find it.
September 29th, 2008 - 8:36 am
Yes, JCrew says the flower pins are sold out on their ‘accessories’ homepage (below).

Definately shop the Dulken & Derrick website!

I just saw that they are “sold out” on J. Crew as well. I’m so confused and sad, as I’ve been checking daily and couldn’t wait to see the line-up.
Also, thanks for posting the D&D website but (like patricia) I can’t seem to find their JCrew section. Do you think they were asked to take it down?
October 1st, 2008 - 9:29 am
Kelly, I agree. How could they sell out? It doesn’t make any sense. I would suggest buying flowers directly from Dulken & Derrick. I posted the link in the entry above. The link is their J.Crew section, but renamed Special Ocassions.

Let me know what you decide!

Glad I came across this info. I saw the J. Crew catalog and knew I had to get some of these flowers. I remembered I had seen this company on Martha Stewart a few years ago and waited to go to the store. I was going to New York so I waited to order. Of course I found out they have closed. So I rushed to order online. I hope whoever bought the company will continue to make these great flowers.
