Double-cloth Greta coat, $365.00, Item 96694

I was leafing through one of my many fashion magazines tonight and came across this beauty! The coat looked so familiar, but not at the same time. Upon closer examination, I realized it was the Greta coat in a great new print and color!  The orange houndstooth is beautiful! This coat will probably be a best seller for J.Crew!

What are your thoughts on the new version of the Greta?  Do you love it?  Is it too bold in orange?  Do you think it will be a hit among many J.Crew shoppers?

Update: Here is the orange version of the Greta coat from the J.Crew website.

They have a similar version in the same print in the girls Crewcuts section. I really like it for the little girls….I would have to see it in person to decide how it would look on an adult. I do like orange though……

I love it. But then again, I really love the regular Greta.

This has a very cute retro appeal to me, but I am not sure how much I could use it in this color combo to justify a $375 price tag. I would rather buy a new Coach purse…

I think I prefer asolid color, but only because I don’t think I’d wear the orange one too much. :) I actually really like this coat and am torn between this one and the Felicia. One concern I have is whether it only buttons at the top, leaving the bottom part exposed. Either way, it’ll be a tough decision for sure. Since it gets cold late in the year for me, I am hoping to see if either coat goes on sale before I “need” it. :)

Melanie – I purchased the Greta in persimmon and violet. The violet is going back as it is more purple and less blue than it looks online.

I love this coat! It does only fasten at the top, but it overlaps enough to provide coverage. Even when I am seated, it does not fall open.

Hi everyone, I saw this coat in the orange houndstooth and totally loved it. However seeing as I bought the Houndstooth Gramercy Coat last year (almost $500) and it is a yellow houndstooth, I know I don’t really need and orange coat in a similar print…..although this is a jacket not a coat :)
I do love it though. I was wondering if anyone had bought this style in the plain color and how it fit eg true to size? as the non collection coats are usually too big for me. Anyway, I know when it comes out I’ll be trying it on at least. I had already seen the Crewcuts coat in this pattern and thought it was gorgeous. So Leigh, if you don’t have a houndstooth coat or jacket already…I say go for it!

You know, we absolutely adore the lines on this coat and always have. But the color on this houndstooth is just not for us… we would look worse than a pumpkin.

The wait list on the blue colorway for the Astrid jacket is disconcerting – waaahhhhh! Unfortunately, we’re not sure we want to wait until then….hhmmm. Thoughts to ponder.

BTW, we are so in love with your site….it is just fabulous.

Ann, thanks for pointing out the print is featured in a Crew Cuts version for girls. I just looked at it and it is priced at $348, not much off of the women’s price. Wow, that is kind of ridiculous for a little girl’s coat!

Lissie, I like the Greta in the solid colors, too. I am really attracted to the the buttons on this coat.

Melanie, I have been eying the Felicia coat, too. I especially love it in the bright rhubarb color. I have tried it on several times at the store. I think the color is so fun and feminine. You do have a tough decision ahead of you as the Greta and Felicia are both great silhouettes.

Aasha, did you try on the coat in person? Is the orange too bright? Or do you prefer the yellow houndstooth on the Gramercy more? I will definitely think about purchasing this coat when it debuts on the website.

Hey ThePrincess! I am glad you are enjoying the site. J.Crew clothes are great items to ponder. I always think of ways to justify my purchases of the great clothes. If you like the Astrid, I would suggest getting on the wait list or calling your local store to see if they have it in your size. It is going fast!

Leigh, Are these the same crested buttons on this coat? I love the buttons of the solid Greta. I wonder if they will chip, but they look great? I would still opt for the solids because I think it will get used for more seasons. Now if the solids came in this shorter length, I would have a tough decision.

Leigh, The Gramercy is definitely a different fabric (and a more fancy coat :) - it was a pretty high end fabric – it is a very soft (“lofty” I think they called it) and I was absolutely not disappointed when I got it. It is a gold and cream houndstooth and because of the nature of the fabric there is not the stark contrast between the 2 colors of the pattern, if you get what I mean and it is really a gold, not a bright yellow color. This coat is going to be a more flat wool so that the contrast with the orange will be a lot more distinct. I LOVE my Gramercy coat and it was totally worth the Couture price. This one, no I wasn’t able to try it yet, but I saw the fabric in a return of a childs Crewcuts coat in the store (yes that is way too expensive for a little girl!!) is nice, but not nearly as high end as my coat – assuming they are going to use the exact same fabric, which is how it looks. It is more of a sort of retro look. I think it really depends on your overall wardrobe and how you style your clothes. I suspect this coat – the orange one – will end up on the sale pages, so I think I’d wait until then to buy it. I do still like the look of it though….(Oh and if you go to www.kaboodle.com/reviews/houndstooth-gramercy-coat-8 I found a picture of it for comparison purposes)

I ordered this coat and it just arrived. It’s a weird color — not white but kind of yellowish (and a crisp white shirt clashes with it) — and it doesn’t fit well at all. It should be a maternity coat. I am returning asap. So disappointed.

  11. Leigh says:

Jane, would you mind posting a review of the coat? I would love to share it on my blog. Would you be able to take a photo of the coat?

I received my Sea Salt Greta yesterday (which I received free shipping on!) I am SO excited about this coat. I really debated the size 6 or size 8 since my blazer size is 6. I wear an 8 pant, but I hate baggy coats. Well, I ordered the size 8 coat and I am glad that I did! While I would be okay with it being a little bit slimmer in the torso area, my arms move very well in the 8 and I can’t imagine them being any more restricted, so if I had ordered a 6, it would have gone back. This coat is NOT close fitting through the waist, so if you are looking for a fit like that, this is not it. However, I love this coat and I wasn’t looking for a trim one – I wanted a unique cut and the slight swing to this coat is so fun and beautiful. It feels luxurious but I won’t be afraid to pick up my kids in it, and it looks great with pearls or jeans.

If you’re considering it, get this coat – you won’t be disappointed!
