Kelly Ripa Spotted in J.Crew Tissue Ruffles Tank

Tissue rolling-ruffles tank, $44.00, Item 12667

Kelly Ripa was recently spotted in the tissue ruffles tank from J.Crew. She wore the J.Crew tank in the slate color after taping one of her shows.

I tried this tank on in stores and found that in ran big, really big. It also wasn’t very flattering on my figure. The ruffles were overwhelming and the tank just hung on me.

Kelly Ripa is also very petite so I wonder how she has it styled under her coat.

Have you recently tried on this tank? Or did you purchase it? If so, what are your thoughts on it? How are you wearing it?

I tried on the tank when it first came out. It was ok on me but not great. Decided not to purchase.

I haven’t seen this in the store yet but I will say it was probably my favorite thing in the new catalog. I might go to the store today and try it on, and if I like it, I might actually (GAK) pay full price for it. …. because now that it’s been spotted on Kelly Ripa it will be impossible to find and eBay sellers will use it as a selling point.

On the subject of things running big, did anyone else find that the J Crew Lydia silk to (sleeveless, with ruffled neckline and buttons) ran large also? It sold out online before I could get it but I got one on eBay in a Medium and jeez it’s big. I will definitely have to get it taken in. I want to get it in another color but I don’t like having to have things tailored when they aren’t cheap to begin with. Does anyone else have this shirt and if so, did you find that it runs big? Thanks!

I haven’t tried this on yet, but I would imagine you would need to be a stick for it to look good with all the ruffles. I think a cute way to wear this would be with some skinny jeans, ballet flats and a cropped jacket in a bright color, with a long necklace like the one kelly is wearing.

I am a huge fan of ruffles and really love tis tank… I think a cute way to wear this would be with some skinny jeans, ballet flats and a cropped jacket in a bright color, with a long necklace like the one kelly is wearing.

I bought it the week it came out! I’m a former Jcrew Personal Shopper so there are a few things that I will grab right off the rack! I am 5′6 and a size 8-M and I bought the tank in a small. I LOVE it! It is long enough for my long torso and the ruffles are darling. I have paired it with an American Apparel tissue tank and the new Jcrew Merino Michelle cardigans (in dusty rose and golden avocado). It looks cute with jeans, with my skirts for work, or with my favorite cashmere lounge pants! I’m very fair skinned so I only got it in the slate color, but had there been other non-skin toned colors I would have it in multiple colors.

I suggest at least a try on! And use it in different ways! It probably looks better with a little something under it and size down!

OK, I just got back from trying this on. As others have said, this runs big. But I found that the colors did not flatter my skin tone (I am pale and pink/cool-toned) and I could not convince myself that any of the colors looked good on me. I also felt that the straps were too thin to balance out the weight of the ruffled bodice. I might have liked the shirt better if the straps were wider. I felt like it made my arms look fat. :-/ Last but not least, something about the ruffles added bulk to me in a way that was not good. So I declined. Maybe if there are any left at $29.99 or $19.99 I might reconsider, or maybe once I get some tan going on….

I did pick up a lovely jet black cotton sateen haberdashery button-down for $19.99 – it really fits beautifully and there was no need to convince myself that I should buy it; my reflection sold me on it.

I also got a slate gray slub hoodie, the ones that just got marked down to $34.99. I just LOVE that slub fabric and I cannot get enough of it. I will love this for the beach and chilly spring/summer/fall nights. The length is longer than I thought it would be. It’s sort of tunic length.

I bought this in the creamy color and paired it with a long JCrew navy cardigan and dark jeans. I am a Lauren Hutton vintage gal and my husband and 20year old son loved the look. Size down for sure.

  9. Jennie says:

I got this in my normal size and really like it. The ruffles are very cute and I don’t think it adds bulk. I’ve worn it with the vintage slim jeans cuffed. I love it.

  10. Annie says:

I havent tried it on yet but seeing how Kelly Ripa styled it makes me want to! Its a bold piece, but with more classic other pieces like a black jacket, jeans, scarf and dainty long necklace it just looks so chic.

  11. Allison says:

Haven’t tried it on and don’t intend to, especially after reading about fair/pink-skinned not working well! But, fun fact- this is also known as the Cupcake Tank : )

  12. puglady says:

Allison, don’t let my opinion sway you – it could work for you. I encourage you to go and try it on if possible — it’s just a beautiful piece of workmanship. Normally when the new catalog comes I just sort of glaze over looking at the ‘old reliable’ pieces – usually the only things that stand out are whatever the new ’signature prints’ happen to be, such as Ellora or Palace Floral. But this item stood out to me right away. I may do a little spray tan action and go back and try this on again and see if I feel differently. :-)

  13. Jodi says:

The photo in the catalog does not do this piece justice. It is very attractive and very comfortable. It does not make you look fat, it enhances the bust. Believe me.

  14. Leigh says:

After reading everyone’s comments here, I have decided that I am going to try on this tank again when I visit my local store.

Allison, why does everyone at your store call it the Cupcake tank?

  15. Sandy says:

I wanted this piece to work so badly! I went back twice to try it on, but both times the issues were the same – it made my XS/0 hourglass shape look pretty wide and square. For anyone who normally wears S and up I’d suggest sizing down, but if you wear an XS you might be out of luck unless you happen to be just the right shape. Layering it under a jacket might de-emphasize the width…

  16. deb says:

Agreed, this must be tried on, as it will look different on different figures. For the most part, I thought it would add pounds but it didn’t. I am 5′4 size 6. I purchased the small and almost purchased the XS as everyone says to size down, but be careful! If it fits snug, the ruffles will stick to your body. You want this to flow a bit so that the ruffles hang. I purchased the light beige one and paired it with the Summerweight cardigan in champagne – it looks FAB!

  17. Crew Lover says:

I am very petite as well (5′0, 97lbs) I loved this top when I saw it on the table at the store, but when I tried on the XS it was HUGE! It just kind of hung on my body. I wonder if she has her tops taken in on the sides…I have to do this to many of my tops. A good seamstress is worth the investment!
