I love featuring brides who wore a J.Crew dress on their wedding day. And it’s always a treat to see the Daphne dress!

A reader named Tory recently left a comment in the post, “The Coveted Daphne Wedding Gown.” She writes:

Back in April, [another reader named] Dearbhla mentioned on this blog that she was selling her Daphne dress on eBay–and I was the lucky one who got it (and wore it July 25 for my small Connecticut wedding)! For those of you out there looking for it, it’s true–it’s just lovely. However, there are a few “surprises”: it’s a stiffer material than I had expected (thanks to the silk organza), the very full skirt can be difficult to take in (especially if you want to keep the pockets–and I did), and it can be see-through on a sunny day (so my seamstress added an extra liner). With all that being said, the dress is incredible and I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to wear it! Good luck to all the searchers out there…

When my brother got married four years ago, I was more than surprised to hear that my sister-in-law’s wedding dress had been purchased from J. Crew. Knowing nothing about the wedding line, I assumed that she had simply purchased an average—albeit lovely—J. Crew beach dress. Clearly, I had a lot to learn!

By the time my own engagement turned into an actual wedding date, I had just five months to get ready. Knowing my wedding would be a tiny affair in the beautiful countryside of northwest Connecticut, I wanted a simple, easy dress. As I considered various J. Crew wedding dresses from the current season, I simultaneously kept my eyes peeled to the JCrewAholics blog. Like so many girls before, I’d fallen in love with the Daphne dress, and I crossed my fingers that someone wanted to sell it. Within a month, I got lucky! The dress appeared on eBay, and I snapped it up. Not knowing my exact size (I’d lost 30 pounds since the engagement), I hoped for the best. What happened was far from it.

When the dress arrived on my doorstep, I opened it with great delight. Sadly, within minutes, I was tearfully dissolved in the middle of the room. The dress was far too big in every way and made of a rougher material than I had anticipated (silk organza), and I seemed swallowed up by the dozens of pleats I thought I would love so much. And yet this was my only option: I had purchased it without trying on a single other dress.

Rather than take you through the trauma of the weeks that followed, I’ll simply fast forward to the day I met Liz Belfi, a phenomenal seamstress with her own shop in Oakland, NJ. She, too, loved the dress, and she could see what I could not. For weeks, she painstakingly disassembled and reassembled the dress, shrinking it by two sizes while also using the extra length to create a tiny train. She even added an extra liner and a button at the top due to my concerns about undergarments showing! By the time I’d added the headpiece from my mom’s veil, it was clear that my instincts were right: the Daphne was it.

I couldn’t have been more comfortable or felt more effortless on my July wedding day. The dress was cool, easy to move in, and never required readjusting; not once did I have to tug anything up—or down! All the guests of my parents’ generation loved the traditional feel of the dress, and all of my friends found the vintage look totally unique. As for me, the comfort of the dress put me so at ease that I was able to bask in the joy of the day with the man I adore. If I could, I’d wear it every day!

A few summers ago, J.Crew released the Celeste Pique Dot dress. This dress is highly sought after and blogged about on many wedding websites. Many brides covet this beautiful dress for their walk down the aisle.

I still get many inquiries every day about how to locate the Daphne dress from J.Crew, which was introduced into the wedding collection back in January 2007.

I visited New York this past weekend and stopped by the J.Crew store at Rockefeller Plaza.  Unfortunately, I missed the Bridal Trunk show that was written about in the post, “Say “I Do” to J.Crew Weddings.”

When I first started this blog, I wrote about how much I loved the J.Crew Daphne dress in the post, “The Coveted Daphne Wedding Gown.”  In the comments of that post, Donna writes the she purchased this beautiful gown when it was first released by J.Crew back in 2007.  When the time came, she planned to wear it for her wedding.

Well, Donna has decided to sell her Daphne dress as she and her fiance will be eloping.  She wrote me and wants to offer it to fellow J.CrewAholics.   Please see her terms below and pictures above.

As you know, I’ve decided to sell my NEW, never worn size 4 Daphne gown since I’ll be eloping…:)))) So, here are the pics which I hope do the dress justice (I even included a close-up of the pocket!)! It will of course need a press from being packaged in its original box, but it is otherwise in pristine condition. Again, I would LOVE for one of my “sisters” on the site to get it since we’re all fans of J. Crew—-they’re chosen family to me! As such, I have not posted this gown for sale anywhere else. The highest offer over $1200 (not including shipping and insurance) will nab it. The catch? The bride-to-be MUST post pics on your site for all of us to see! Let me know if you’re still amenable to me offering the gown for sale on your site.

The following is a guest blogging special from a J.CrewAholic, GingerSnap.  You can check out her personal blog, GingerSnap’s Daily Fashion Post.  She wore a J.Crew wedding dress when she got married last summer.

My wedding date was June 21, 2008 and I got married to my long-time sweetheart “Hubby.” Hubby and I met up at college at Florida State University where he was a server in my Sorority house. In the Greek system, Sororities often “employ” Fraternity guys to “serve” at their house (i.e. help with meals) and in return the guys get free food and hang out at the house. Well, I was a new initiate at the time and Hubby had just started working there. He was immediately smitten with me, but I was not “interested” in dating anyone at the time. Thankfully, he was persistent, and about a month later we went on our first date…that was six and a half years ago.

We dated all throughout college and spent countless game days cheering for the Florida State Seminoles, attending Fraternity functions, and just being college kids. I even became his Fraternity’s sweetheart (I was on the composite photo with all the boys and got my own “badge number”). When college was nearing to an end, we decided to move to the same Gulf Coast town together and pursue graduate school. Our second year into graduate school, Hubby proposed!

He collaborated with my Dad to make a “sailor’s valentine” – a small octagon shaped wooden box filled with seashells arranged in a pattern. Sailors used to make them for their loved ones while they were away at sea. He presented the valentine to me in March of 2007. When I opened the valentine up, it had written “Will You Marry Me” in seashells, with the engagement ring tied to a sand dollar on the inside. I immediately said “YES!”

Fast forward a year and three months later, and we were getting married I always envisioned myself in a simple, elegant dress (nothing too frilly or lacey). I immediately was drawn to J.Crew dresses because of their clean lines and simple design. I was particularly taken with the “Jenelle” dress because it was very reminiscent of the dress Caroline Kennedy wore to her wedding. I ordered it from the sales associate in a Petite 0, and when it arrived it fit like a glove! No alterations needed, it was like the dress was made for me. It was a sign.

We got married on a rainy summer Florida day in June, and the wedding was perfect. We had our ceremony at a little chapel by the beach and our reception at a Country Club right on the water. It was picturesque and perfect in our eyes. We still joke about the rain on our wedding day…you know how they say rain is good luck?, well any more “luck” and we would have had a hurricane on our hands!

Overall, I was beyond pleased with the wedding and was happy to have had such a simple, beautiful dress to get married in. Sometimes the most beautiful things are the simplest…and boy did I feel beautiful.

Update: This is the not first time J.Crew has hosted a Bridal Trunk Show. Back in 2004 when the company first decided to venture into the wedding dress business, trunk shows were hosted in their New York and Chicago offices.  Sales at J.Crew were sagging and the Wedding Collection was a hit. 

J. Crew [wedding dresses are]  relatively simple and streamlined, like the brand’s clothing overall, with a minimum of beading and lace. “We like to think of our line as classic, clean, and playful,” Lyons says. “Many brides-to-be want to focus on summery, brighter colors — like a hot pink dress with coral shoes.” The line also features a wide variety of deep jewel tones for fall and winter weddings, complete with both longer and dressier gowns, she adds.
