Changes to J.Crew Student & Teacher Discount

Several readers and followers on Twitter have alerted me to the changes that J.Crew have implemented to their student and teacher discount. In the image above, the 15% discount can be applied to EVERY J.Crew purchase. But not anymore!
J.Crew has changed it so that the discount can only be applied toward full price merchandise. That’s right! Sale items are no eligible for the discount
Here’s the response I received from online customer service:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the student/teacher discount program.
We have been delighted in providing this special discount for those of our customers living and working in the academic community, and look forward to continuing this service. As of May 1, 2009, however, the basis for determining qualifying orders has changed.
The education discount will continue to be applicable to all regularly priced and promotionally priced merchandise selected for purchase at our J.Crew retail stores, at jcrew.com, or via a phone call. Any merchandise that is sale or clearance-priced and ending in 99 cents, will not qualify for the additional 15% price reduction.
We hope you will continue to enjoy the ongoing, money-saving aspects of our student/teacher discount program, and we look forward to continuing its benefits to you during your active status in the academic community.
If we can be of further assistance, please let us know by responding to this email at contactus@jcrew.com or calling a J.Crew Associate at 1-800-562-0258.

Sweeeet!

That’s disappointing. The full discount was vital to my addiction! Also, has anyone else recently received a note from Mickey Drexler in their order meant to look like it was handwritten? I thought that was a nice touch.

It sounds like they are cutting back on special services. I was in the J. Crew at Columbus Circle yesterday and overheard them telling a customer the the “red phone” in stores will now only allow you free shipping on full priced items. It used to be for anything you ordered from that phone in the store. Too bad
May 15th, 2009 - 3:52 pm
I didn’t tell you this, but if you ask the associate placing the order on the red phone with you, they’ll waive the shipping, even on promotional/sale items.

That’s a shame. I’m glad I got the discount on a couple sale items last week while I still could!
May 15th, 2009 - 11:13 pm
Yeah, the last order I placed only partially qualified for the student discount. It’s a bit of a bummer, but oh well. Hopefully J.Crew will still try to entice me through good online promotions and free shipping codes!

I didn’t even know that they had a teacher discount, so I am actually pretty happy to learn that as a college adjunct I can take advantage of this on my future visits

I’m so upset about this! I can’t afford full-price J. Crew clothing, and having the discount really helped! How could they do this to people who don’t have any money in the first place? I’m a former employee, and will be also writing a complaint letter to Mickey himself. I strongly encourage each of you to sign the petition above to have this reversed! Throw on some boyfriend chinos and a cashmere tee, people, and let’s rise up!

Wow! I had no idea teachers got a discount! Just bought a new bathing suit too… what is the code for teachers?

Hrmmm seems a bit silly to implement essentially higher prices during a time when most retailers are slashing prices like crazy and treating you like a queen at the same time….Potentially J. Crew has decided to focus it’s efforts on other clientele.
May 17th, 2009 - 1:21 pm
Actually, the associates can’t waive shipping on sale items if you ask. The employees in Lynchburg are put in an uncomfortable situation when associates ask, because they’re not allowed to waive the shipping unless it’s full price. If that has happened, great, but try not to put associates or the employees in Lynchburg in that situation! They actually changed that policy either right before or after the holidays.
And, Crew is slashing prices, cashmere and jewelry is marked down so much more than it has in a great amount of time.

Re: Kate @ 11:19 am – If you dont have any money in the first place…why are you spending any money at all at j.crew? J.crew needs to make sure they continue to make a nice profit from their business and Im sure you can understand that. Also, j.crew’s sale selection (especially online) is muchhh more expansive than the majority of other retailers these days. Just something to think about.

Cheryl brings up a good point, I didn’t know you can use it online and over the phone. How does that work?

I have a question. Do high school students also get the discount, or just college?
August 28th, 2009 - 2:30 am
The student discount is open to all students, high school and college, even grad students.

Do you know how I order online? is there a coupon code I use?
How did you find the offer? Is it on their website?

Why is no one answering the question about HOW to get the discount online!? I can’t believe I didn’t know about this? HOW do you get it online, what is the code?

You can use your 15% discount at any factory store also, it’s only for Teachers, College Students & Grad students with a valid ID, an Insurance Card with the school district on it. It’s not for High School Students.

Found student/teacher discount policy on the website. Go to “Help” at bottom of home page (next to “Contact Us”). In right column, shows that 15% discount is for ALL teachers and COLLEGE students with valid ID, for in-store purchases only, on full-priced merchandise only.
