The Cashmere Audrey Dress from J.Crew

The Cashmere Audrey Dress from J.Crew
Cashmere Audrey dress, $248.00, Item 97453

I have been eying the cashmere Audrey dress from afar.  The dress dress looks so pretty on the model. The silhouette is very slimming and elongating. I like that the bow adds such a great feminine detail.  I think this sweater dress is great for work or play.  It’s definitely a piece that you can wear at the office and then out to dinner, without it looking like you just stepped out of the office.

I have yet to try this dress on at a store, but I fear that the XS will still be too roomy, as J.Crew shirt dresses do run larger than normal. I have never been able to purchase one without thinking of great belts to pair with it.

What do you think of this dress? Have you tried it on at the store? Is it just as beautiful in person?

So…Yeah, I bought this dress, in black and silver. But, I’m returning both because it has an unflattering fit. The bow is awkward (maybe I just like more form fitting dresses)- I think it photographs better than it looks in person, and the dress is a little on the bulkier side. :( Too bad, I would have loved to have kept both!

Leigh, I LOVE LOVE this dress and I doubt it will be too big for you as I am very small. Most 0 and XS are too big for me and this isn’t. I tried it in SF 2 days ago and it was beautiful and fit me!!! I am getting it back in PA (no tax). You ca leave the bow tied loosely. I kno that Natedac didn’t like i, but admittedly I am very straight up and down with no curves so maybe it fits me differently. It is loose on me from the waist down but the fit of the chest, armholes bust is excellent, and I have no chest. I like the Silver and will be getting that. I had to restrain myself from buying it right there (with tax!). I am worried it will sell out, even though I actually don’t think it will – they called and there was a lot of stock… It is the really nice Collection relatively tight and heavy cashmere knit if you like that.

Oops, sorry for the typos :)

  4. Natedac says:

Aasha, you’re probably right. I’m tiny too, but built more like a gymnast, so unfortunately sweater hugging dresses don’t look good on me! :(

  5. Aasha says:

Natedac, you probably look good in lots of things that I don’t! I actually went on Ebay hoping someone maybe was selling one on there since I am kind of broke right now and I REALLY want this dress and the Butterfield jacket and I totally can’t spend the$ since it is those things or you know, rent and other mundane things. I actually called J.Crew and they answered right away (amazing) to find out about stock levels and got an unusually pushy woman who I really didn’t appreciate who a) didn’t give me a straight answer re stock levels – I have called enough times in the past to know they can tell you e.g. if there are <50, and then she, in a very bossy way, tried to get me to buy it even though I had told her at the beginning of the call that I have a PS and would be waiting on the order today and just wanted information. She was also weird in that she just looked for the dress in my zip code when that should be irrelevant – they can get it anywhere – I had already found out that my local store didn’t have it! This is not what I call good or knowledgeable customer service and I have never had a call handled in such a strange way. The reason you call is to find out about stock levels in total – not just in your local area!!Way to go J.Crew…..?! Leigh/everyone, does this seem weird?

  6. Leigh says:

Aasha, I have had similar experiences when I call the catalog to check stock levels. They are never forthright and want to answer in vague terms. I think they do that to get you to buy the item.

I have been told before that an item was sold out when it really wasn’t. That really annoyed me.

What I do is the add the item to my shopping bag and for quantity, I fill in something crazy like 100. Once in your shopping bag, J.Crew will adjust it to the “actual” availability. That way, I can kind of guage the stock levels.

Sorry to hear that you got such a rude customer service lady. I feel bad for all that they have had to endure this summer. They didn’t create the mess the surrounded the website upgrade, but have had to deal with the backlash.

It’s stressful for all parties involved.

  7. Aasha says:

Leigh, thanks a lot for that suggestion re checking numbers. Yes that lady made me really mad – esp as I actually complimented her at the beginning of the call for answering right away!! Oh and I’d buy the dress if I were you (you can always return it if you don’t like it :)

I was also eyeing this dress, but I bought the dream silvie instead. I like that the waist is already gathered – I find cinching my own waists (like with belted ribbons and etc.) always bunches funny for me. I thought the drape of the silvie was great. It’s too warm in CA to wear it but I can’t wait for fall now!

  9. Ashley says:

I think the Audrey looks adorable! I think the bow would allow you to cinch it around your waist for a perfect fit, even it it is initially a little too big.

Like Melania, I got the Dream Silvie, and I love it! I really want to get the Dream Soho, but it is already sold out in my size in eggplant which is the color I really want. J. Crew really has so many cute sweater dresses this season. The cashmere Flora is also sooo adorable as well.

  10. Leigh says:

Melanie & Ashley, I really like that sweater dress, too! I have yet to see in in person.

So I just called to have this dress held for me to pick up in SF next week since my store doesn’t have it (and don’t want to deal with another rude/pushy online person), anyway FYI I found out from the manager that re the Sept 24th rollout, they will have about half of these items a week ahead of time :) I am not sure if this is only in large stores, but just thought I would let everyone know….

  12. Natedac says:

Hey Aasha- I have both of these colors, black and silver in hand, XS- NWT- I was going to return mine since I didn’t look dashing in them. Please let me know if you would like them, they will be $235 each+ USPS Priority Shipping w/insurance costs to you- I can get it out tomorrow morning to you. Just let me know! Audrey

  13. Aasha says:

Audrey, that’s a really nice offer. Can I think on it for a few days? The only reason I am hesitating is that I was going to pay for the dress with exchange/return for some other stuff since I’ve sort of shopped a lot lately :) , but I could potentially use my returns/credit for other stuff. Are you in a big hurry to return your dresses? If yes I totally understand.

  14. Natedac says:

    Aasha,

Not a big hurry, I just wanted to return of the one you didn’t want (I’m guessing you’d like to have the black one b/c it’s on backorder)- I was going to go to the store in a day or so- ndacuycuy@cox.net

    Thanks, Audrey

  15. Leigh says:

Aasha, I am sorry to hear another rude experience you had with J.Crew customer service. Seems like you are getting that a lot lately! Thanks for the heads up on the next roll out of new goodies. I hope you and Audrey work out something for the dress.

  16. Aasha says:

Yes Leigh, I’m a bit gunshy about calling lately….
Audrey, thanks, I’ll email you – I saw the black was backordered so it was that one I was thinking about :) my email girlfromoz_100@hotmail.com

Saw Natedac’s ebay sale on this dress for $350.00 each. Her selling comments are very different than hat she left on this site! Hmmmmmmmmmmmm……
