How To Market To (J.Crew) Men

I read an interesting article over at David’s Hauslab’s Jossip this morning where he talks about marketing towared male shoppers. He talks about how J.Crew chose alcohol as a way to draw in their male clientele. He writes:

We can’t tell whether J. Crew plans on serving customers a higball while shopping — they most likely do not have a liquor license — but maybe a pour of Johnnie Walker Black is your free gift with purchase.

This got me thinking about how retailers makert their clothing toward men. Should they use booze, sex, or sports? Those three seem to be the only options I can think of.

What do you think? What can retailers do to entice men into shopping at their stores?

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

Kevin, I love all of your suggestions. “Fried foods” made me laugh out loud. I wonder if that really works with clothing.

well this isn’t equal opportunity employment but I got a single male friend of mine to set foot in a J.Crew store because i told him pretty girls worked there. so I guess “sex” sells because he actually went shopping and bought some things from J.Crew.

i wish jcrew would market to *me* (a girl who loves whisky and scotch and jcrew) with a shot while i shop!

Kevin and Allison’s suggestions are hilarious! Imagine pyrotechnics going off everytime a guy came in the store! LOL! And Leanne, if I had a shot everytime I went into a J.Crew, they would definitely be getting more money from me than I would normally “give” them! =P
