Feather Collar Cashmere Cardigan From J.Crew

Feather-collar cashmere cardigan, $500.00, Item 99850

I had the opportunity to try on the feather-collar cashmere cardigan during a recent visit to J.Crew.  It felt really plush and the sweater was very thick and warm. While I do think the sweater is beautiful, I am not sure that it is very wearable. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind statement piece.  I am not sure how one would wear a coat over this collar.

Have you seen this cardigan in real life? Are you considering purchasing it? What are your thoughts on the feather cardigan?

Everyone has different tastes….there is another post on a personal blog where the person rips this sweater apart…It really is quite humorous…I would not wear this but to each his own…makes the world interesting:)

I like cashmere so consider the statement pieces and think it is quite striking but I don’t really like brown so would be unlikely to buy it even if it ended up going on sale…oh and I’ll have to check out the other blog Ann - I think I know the one you mean - probably the one where people are often moaning and complaining about J.Crew… :)

  3. Ann

It wasn’t that blog even though I know which one you mean…it was one of the side links though on that blog that links to a personal blog and it was fun to read! It called it fugly or something to that effect.

The pictures here (thanks Leigh) make it look better though than online…Just not liking the brown and the sweater weave…(and I don’t like birds for that matter:) and I forget but I am technically allergic to feathers…ha ha…boy, this one is not for me….:)

    Aasha,
it is champagnewish.blogspot.com (first one on the other sites blog roll….) good for a laugh and we all need those esp. somedays:)

Thanks Ann - oh and I was just on the J.Crew site - they put some of the new stuff on sale fyi. I think I may pick up a skirt I was looking at last weekend (Francie), plus can get price adjustment on a tee. I guess maybe they are getting ready to roll out the new stuff. Have a good weekend :)

    ridiculous

Is the collar detachable so the sweater can be washed? Even dry-cleaning seems impossible with all those feathers. I love anything with feathers on it, although as a SAHM I rarely have an occasion to wear such stuff. At least no animals had to die to make it (I think)…

I agree with Ann that the weave is not appealing to me. That and the pockets and what looks like extra long sleeves and bulky fit are not doing it for me. I do like statement pieces and I own several sweaters with feather collars or trim (some of the non-J. Crew items I have) and I don’t wear a coat or jacket over them. They are fun to wear if you are not going to be eating something messy.

    Aasha,
I like the Francie skirt a lot. I won’t be buying it b/c I got the Atlantic blue watercolor school girl skirt recently and don’t wear skirts much but if I did I would get the Francie:) too. Maybe if I get lucky and it goes on super sale after the holidays.

Price adjustments are always good:) I got one last week as well:)

P.S. I can’t remember but did someone want to know about the spearmint color? If so, I received mine and I am in LOVE with the color:)

I see the map tee I just got went on sale. Good news for a price adjustment. I ordered mine through the red phone - can anyone tell me how to go about getting a price adjustment? I have only done it once when I bought something in the store. Thanks!

I LOVE this! I’m surprised I haven’t seen it yet! I’m definitely interested and would buy. LOVE the comment about the bitching and moaning on the other blog…the bulk of it seems to come from one person that looks for things to be wrong…it’s very bizarre, as if this person takes J.Crew personally…oh well negative attracts negative, and I think she’s giving and receiving in spades.

I actually do have this sweater and commented about it on the other blog. My main concern was that the feathers were substantially longer on one side than the other creating an uneven effect. I do like the color Hazlenut, and the ribbing actually is quite slimming. I cuffed the sleeves and they looked great. My problem is that I can think of other pieces that I would get more usage out of, therefore I will be sending this back on Monday. Also, the feathers are pretty subdued…I do not think that people would look at you and think that you forgot to remove your feather boa…LOL. Also, sumptuously soft cashmere. If it goes on sale I am sure that I will pick it right up. :)

Hi all, Ann - I asked about the spearmint color, so thanks. And yes the Frankie skirt is cute, but I wear skirts a lot, so might get it today…not sure. Kate - to get the price adjustment if you bought through the redphone, just call customer service and they will do it with info through your receipt. If you are near a store, you can also take in the receipt and they will do it. Just make sure it is withi 5days. If you have a PS they will do it for you. And yes I love the map tee - esp on sale :). And re the blog with bitching and moaning - I think we all know which one that is….it seems to me that all the threads on there just deteriorate into general bashing of J.Crew and it seems kind of silly to me - esp as there are a lot of “Anon” posters. I actually don’t go on there very often. I like this blog - thanks Leigh - because we talk about the Clothes?!! OK well have a great day everyone…

    oops - ‘Francie’ skirt….:)

Everyone is skirting around the name of this “other blog.” I am truly clueless as to what you all are referring to; I feel sadly outdated, as I’m brand new to reading a blog. :) Is it bad form to state the name? I’m just wondering why people would actively dislike J Crew? Perhaps it’s a bit expensive?

  17. Nicole

I think the feathers take away from the beauty of the cashmere. I wouldn’t touch that thing with a ten foot pole.

  18. Ann

I have had good and bad experiences with JCrew over the course of many years…some of the “bashing” is well deserved although name calling (of other people) is not necessary.

  19. joyce

Hate the sweater, the feathers are overpowering the garment, not to mention the high price tag.

The problem with the other blog is there are a couple of people get carried away with their opinions and write very long posts complaining about J Crew! It is all negative, lot of regulars have stopped posting there.

I *adore* the feathers but they seem very mismatched to the body of the cardi! What an opportunity to put something like that on a nice smooth cashmere or even wool - but it just doesn’t work at all on this chunky-knit, pocketed disaster. Oy. What a shame. Just my 2 cents.

The pic on your website is a more accurate representation of the colors. The feathers are not as dark IRL as the web image suggests. My sister ordered it and looked really nice on her but she could not get passed the fact that the feathers did not look as rich in IRL and she couldn’t get the collar to stand in the same way. I think that’s the nature of the color–each one is going to be different.

IMHO, JC should have rolled this one out earlier in the year. Its really more of a sweater/coat than a sweater that you would wear indoors. Its really not a sweater that would fit well under a coat. Plus, it really strikes me as being more fall than holiday. Sis is returning because she is not loving it for the price.

Janna, I think people just seem to like to complain instead of just talk about the clothes and for me, and it seems like most of us here on Leigh’s blog - since we don’t do it - that just gets old. I think if you have a genuine customer service issue you can contact the company eg J.Crew, and if it is ongoing and/or not resolved to your satisfaction, then you can take your business elsewhere, not just whine and complain and bash the company on a blog…..I mean in the end, we are talking about clothes….not life and death….:)

  23. joyce

Yep they are back at in again, Aasha I totally agree with you.

  24. Christine

I think I would like this sweater better if the knit was different as some of you also said. The rib-knit just doesn’t look as luxurious as the feather collar suggests the sweater should be.

  25. lovethecrew

Who is “they” and what are they “back at” again? (Forgive me if this is known to the group - I have just stumbled across this blog in the past couple of days.) Is this something I should know about - or avoid?

Thanks in Advance, and thanks for such a fun place to read, Leigh!

  26. lovethecrew

Oh, and I failed to mention - I actually like the look of this sweater a lot. If the collar were detachable, the sweater would be more wearable and versatile, and I might just have to spring for it (on sale or with a rewards card, of course!)

  27. vachetta

The collar is detachable, there are buttons around the collar to take it off and clean it. Actually, it’s not recommended to dry clean cashmere. The chemicals used in the cleaning process breaks down the natural lanolin of the yarns. To increase longevity for your cashmeres, what is most recommended is using a cashmere wash- they sell Laundress wash at the Collection Store. If you can’t find that or don’t want to spend the money on the wash (which I think is worth it- you spend $160 on a sweater, you might as well drop another $18 to make it last a few years) a capful of Johnson & Johnson’s Head-To-Toe Baby Wash will do the trick for a cashmere hand washing.
