The French Serge Opera Coat from J.Crew
I’ve had several readers email me about how much they love the French serge opera coat. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind statement piece which is now sold out. I especially love how it is styled in the catalog as shown below.
Are you surprised that the opera coat is sold out? Or are you coveting another piece from the outerwear collection?

This does surprise me a bit in this economy, but then again, we JCA’s seem to have been able to sustain our “habit” this year by hook or by crook. I suppose if this were an item I just HAD to have I’d have foregone my spring tees & cardis and such. (As if I had the discipline to do THAT! LOL!)
I’m definitely in the minority here, I think, but I personally am jonesing for the Winnie coat in the bright yellow. And it’s not even “my” yellow (which would be more buttery). I’ve got arms like a gorilla and the sleeves hit me perfectly on this jacket. Navy would be the far safer choice, but I’ve tried the yellow on in my B&M twice now and I break out into a grin each time.

Well, I inadvertently gave my real name away on that last comment, I see. Menopausal sleepless night = careless typing. Guard that precious info well, friends.

I really want to get a cream coat this year…but the yellow {sigh….} I could wear the yellow as a blonde or if I stay with red hair…

So many of the pieces are looking very vintage. I personally, couldn’t be happier. As a 23 year old college student I find myself wanting to look more adult and professional, but still being interesting and fun. These kind of pieces are my way of doing so. I’m sure all the old movies I’m addicted to are helping, also.

The opera coat was lovely, and I would have bought it instantly (the price wasn’t an issue for me), but the color was terrible. For a brunette, a dark redhead, anyone with high coloring, the mustard color would have been perfect. For a very fair-skinned, blue-eyed blonde, it was all wrong. Blondes, contrary to popular belief (including their own, I’ve found), can’t wear yellow. I was disappointed that the coat wasn’t offered in one or two other colors.
Then again, for the opera and other evening formal events, I prefer a long, sweeping cloak or coat. How about it, J Crew?
