J.Crew For The Man In Your Life

My boyfriend could care less about the clothes he puts on everyday. Because he works from home, his job does not require him to look or a dress a certain way. His style is my style, or what I can convince him to like.

One would think that this would make it easier for me to shop for him, but it doesn’t.  He hates v-neck shirts and sweaters and half zip anythings. He is not a fan of wool and he is not a hoodie person either.

Here are a few of my favorite Mens items from J.Crew that I think he would like. After I write this post, I am going to email it to him so he can see what items I think he should own.

For the guys, what are some of your favorite items? For the ladies, what are some of your favorite items for the man in your life?

Short-sleeve broken-in pocket jersey polo, $42.50, Item 13191

My boyfriend actually owns the short-sleeve broken-in pocket jersey polo in many colors. We purchased them during the summer final sale, where he able to get his size in most of the colors for less than $10 each. I like them because they still have the look of a regular pique polo. He likes them because they don’t really wrinkle and they are super soft.

Cotton-cashmere crew neck sweater, $59.50, Item 86212

I really like all of the cotton-cashmere sweaters at J.Crew. My boyfriend prefers the crew neck because he hates v-neck. These sweaters are prefect for throwing on for any winter event. They look really nice paired with jeans or khakis.

Sherpa track jacket
Sherpa track jacket, $75.00, Item 97401

The Sherpa track jacket is perfect for him during the warmer fall months when a heavy winter coat is still not necessary. My boyfriend’s cold threshold is higher than mine. In fact, he is still sleeping with the air conditioner on at night. (It is November and we live in Philadelphia.) On those warmer days, he can just throw this on and be out the door.

Wool university coat
Wool university coat, $235.00, Item 96037

I am really trying to convince him that he needs a new coat this year. His current one is two years old. The wool university coat would be a perfect replacement. I have touched it in stores and I think he would really like wearing it. I haven’t purchased it yet so I am not sure how the fit is. Too bad the outerwear sale a few weeks ago did not apply to Mens outerwear.

Regular-fit vintage cord trouser
Regular-fit vintage cord trouser, $72.00, Item 96096

The regular-fit vintage cord trouser are actually on promotion in the stores. They are on sale for $39.50 instead of $72.00. Because of this, I purchased them in three of the four colors for my boyfriend. They didn’t have his size in the fourth color or he would have that one, too. He really likes cords and I really liked this pants because of the trouser look. The pockets are flat in the front and back and looks much cleaner all around.

Vintage fleece sweatpant
Vintage fleece sweatpant, $49.50, Item 81249

I would really like to buy the vintage fleece sweatpants for my boyfriend because he is always complaining that he does not have enough lounging around clothes. I think these would be great for those lazy weekends. They look super comfortable. I love that they still have pockets on them.

Not a problem my wife has with me…haha.
Just came back from the end of the 50% off sale items. Just a bunch of whacked out stuff left. Did want to mention, though, that the crewneck cotton cashmere is on sale in store for $39.50. And, they had the $79.50 argyle cotton-cash on the same table as the crewneck–so they ended up *graciously* giving me the $39.50 sale price for the sweater!

My hubby likes the v-neck cotton sweaters I bought him in blue and green a couple of years ago for only $9.99 What a steal! He would wear everything here except for the polo shirt and the sweatpants. He absolutely hates sweatpants and doesn’t think people should wear them in public but he has even gone so far in the past 4 years and won’t wear them at all. He wears JCrew cargo pants when he is at home or jeans.

I’m a fan of Peacoats, vests & half zips. However i dislike cardigans. That’s just me.

Hi! This post came at a time when I was thinking about men’s clothes. I want to get my boyfriend this shirt: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse/Men_Shop_By_Category/shirts/washedfavoriteshirts/PRDOVR~95860/95860.jsp
I am a little confused about the sizing, though since I don’t usually buy men’s clothes. In the past I have gotten him mediums from other stores, sometimes a large. He always says he wears a large, but he often wears things that are too big for him. However, this shirt says it’s a slimmer fit! I don’t know what any of this means and I’m too lazy to go to the store right now and actually look at the sizing.
Any suggestions would be great! Oh, and Leigh, I love those corduroys, too! My BF is so picky about his pants though, I don’t know if I could convince him to get them.

  5. Leigh says:

Elizabeth, your comment made me laugh!

My boyfriend has the same complex, wearing clothes that are clearly too big. When we first met, he was wearing size L shirts. The the seam of the sleeve did not even hit the top of his shoulders, they were on the sides of his arms. Clearly, too big.

For this shirt, I would probably order the size M for your boyfriend. J.Crew sizing for Mens does run a little bit fuller.

Also, the cords are great because he says they feel like sweatpants. Only the trouser version are on promotion, which is fine for me. I prefer the look with less pockets. I would bring a pair home for him to try on and see what he thinks.

For my guy its those cotton cashmere sweaters. I bought one for him on sale last year — this was a bit of a stretch because he always says he hates wearing sweaters but I knew he would accept it because I got such a great deal (around $14 I think). Then I noticed he was wearing it quite frequently. So without even mentioning it, I bought him a couple more in different styles/colors and just put them in his closet. He wears them all the time… but he calls them his favorite shirts for cooler weather. LOL.

  7. AJ says:

What would a guy wear to an interview at J Crew for a cashier/sales position? I have one on Tuesday and didn’t know what the best way to go would be. Are jeans ok or are they off limits?

  8. Ann says:

AJ, I would not wear jeans……put on some nice chinos….Just my 2 cents worth……

  9. Dina says:

My boyfriends loves Jcrew. He buys the slim fit polos. Also anything that has a shawl neck.

  10. Dina says:

AJ – From what my friends who have worked at Jcrew explain, there is not a dress code per se, but they do have some rules to follow. I think if you’re going to wear jeans, you need to have a blazer or a shirt with one of their ties, basically if your bottom half is casual, make your top half less so.

  11. Jorda says:

AJ..my suggestion…look on the website…see what the guys are wearing and try your best to emulate one of those looks. I would stay away from jeans and go with khakis though.

  12. Sally says:

Elizabeth, my husband has the same problem of wearing tops too big. I think some men envision their shoulders being bigger than they actually are. He says he feels “restricted” if he can’t freely wave his arms all around. I say “Honey, why do you even need to do that?” I’m trying to get him to start following the trend of men’s clothes being more of a “skinny” fit.

  13. AJ says:

Also, what do they ask you in these retail store interviews and what are they looking for?

  14. Leigh says:

AJ, first of all, good luck on your interview!

Like all the others said, I would wear khakis to the interview rather than jeans. Once you work there, I believe that you can wear jeans. My personal shopper is usually wearing jeans when I see him in the store.

I think the interview is basically a chance for them to get to know you and see if you are a good fit. I don’t many people who have applied to work and at J.Crew and were denied the chance.

I am sure you will do great! Please let us know how it goes!

  15. Leigh says:

Sally, I really don’t understand why men are always feeling restricted in their clothes. Must be some man thing we don’t know about. :)

That is the same reason my boyfriend gives me. he wants to wear everything so loose and then it just looks like he borrowed it from his older brother who is bigger than he is.

  16. isabella says:

The expression is actually “couldn’t care less.” You are emphasizing how little he cares. Saying “he could care less” means that in fact, he does care about what he wears. Don’t mean to offend you, but this is a pet peeve of mine :-)

  17. Sally says:

Isabella, I have the same pet peeve! Also, I hate it when people say “laxadaisical”. It’s not even a word! It’s either “lax” or “lackadaisical”, which have similar meanings. O.K., I think I’ve been on the computer way too long now…

  18. Sophie says:

I always liked corduroy pants, but I don’t know about these particular ones. The guy in the picture looks like they’re giving him a wedgie.

  19. Leigh says:

Sophie, they are actually not fitted in real life. My boyfriend likes to wear his pants loose. He says they fit comfortably around that area.

  20. Katie says:

Yeah, what’s up with guys and half-zips? I love them on men and think they look great on my bf, but he hates them too! Says he doesn’t know what to do with the collar… leave it up, fold it down…?

  21. Leigh says:

Katie, that is too funny. I believe the collar predicament is the same reason why my boyfriend doesn’t care for half-zips.
